Traditional Foods

Aboriginal and First Nations cultures have their own values, traditions and beliefs about what and how to eat well during pregnancy. Because people don’t usually eat as much traditional foods as they once did, it may be that they don’t get the same amount of nutrients from those foods as they use to. If you want to know more about which traditional foods provide the right nutrients while you’re pregnant, see the examples below.

Wild plants, seaweed

Seaweed, wild plants and berries are excellent sources of nutrients that are typically found in vegetables and fruit.

Bannock

Bannock made with baking powder is an excellent source of grains.

Fish with bones, shellfish, nuts, beans

Fish, shellfish, nuts, and beans are all high in protein, and provide excellent sources of nutrients usually found in milk.
