Application Procedures
Potential applicants
may contact the Graduate Adviser of the School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education
with questions and requests for information regarding the School's graduate programs. However, to pursue formal admission,
the student must complete the application package provided by Graduate Admissions
and Records.
In addition to the requirements described in the graduate
application package, admission to the Masters graduate programs
in the School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education requires an undergraduate degree
in exercise science, physical and health education or related field. Admission to a Doctoral
degree program normally requires a Master's degree in exercise science, physical and health education
or related field.
Documents required:
• UVic Graduate Admissions and Records require your application documents in a single package.
• Click into “application package” above and submit an on-line application form to UVIC Graduate Admissions and Records.
• Follow instructions from Graduate Admissions and Records regarding all the documentation they require you to submit.
In addition:
• Applicants for MEd Coaching Studies submit a Coaching Resume outlining your coaching background, experience and certification (attach copies of your coaching certificates).
• Applicants for Masters programs submit a Letter of Intent. This letter needs to state your specific area of research interest. Include a brief statement of your academic and career goals and identify a faculty member as a possible supervisor. A list of the School’s faculty and their areas of research can be found on the School’s homepage under “Faculty and Staff”.
• Applicants for PhD Kinesiology program submit a Letter of Intent and curriculum vitae. The letter should clearly outline the specific area of research, provide a defined idea of a possible study, proposed time limit to completion and include potential costs. This letter should be developed in cooperation with a prospective supervisor.

Registration for Courses
The student
will be directed to their Graduate Supervisor to discuss and agree on specific course
selections. These may include selections from within and outside the
School. They may also be at the graduate or undergraduate level (course timetable).
Graduate students may not register online into undergraduate
courses. Students may have to speak with the course instructor and
even attend the first few classes before being able to register
by using a Graduate Course Change form (Add/Drop) (scroll to the download PDF of this form). The form requires the signature of
the course instructor and the student's graduate supervisor.
On arrival at the campus, students are advised to meet with the Graduate Adviser and Graduate Secretary of the School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education as soon as possible. They are available to assist with successful completion of course identification and registration.
Directed Studies Courses
A common procedure
is for graduate students to enroll in Directed Studies Courses usually
under the direction of their supervisor. These courses are designated
either PE 590 Special Problems or PE 59l Selected Topics. A Pro
forma Proposal form (Directed Studies) (srcoll to the download PDF of this form) must be completed which
describes the planned work in detail and must have the signature
of the intended instructor, graduate supervisor, and graduate adviser
before being considered by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Typically, in these courses, the student does research work, reads
widely in the area, and completes assigned papers as the requirements.
