The fees for graduate
students are very different than those assessed for undergraduate study.
Full details on fees are found in the University of Victoria Calendar.
Students must read the section on fees in the University of Victoria
Calendar. If you have questions about tuition or student fees, contact
the Graduate Admissions and Records Office.
Financial Support
It is the intention of the School that all students in the
first two years of their programs will receive some financial
support. This may come in several ways.
University Fellowships
Students
who have an A- (7.0 on the UVic grading scale), may qualify for a University
Fellowship valued at approximately $12,000.
Sessional
Lecturers/Laboratory Instructors/Academic and Research Assistants
Students who are
employed by the School in positions as described above may receive
a subsidy (amount varies) per annum from the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
This is under the jurisdiction of the Graduate Adviser who makes recommendations to Grad Studies after all appointments are confirmed for each term. Usually there are no AIS subsidies available during the Summer Session.
Students should
be aware that the partial funding for graduate students will likely
conclude after two years as a Masters student and three years as a PhD
student (the expected time for completion). Those students who are not
on Fellowship, can anticipate approximately $6,000 per annum depending on their
involvement in the School. This amount would pay fees and allow a small
amount for living costs. It is not sufficient to pay all living expenses.
Students are also advised that the School has very little opportunity
to fund students during the Summer Session.
EPHE Student Conference Awards
Graduate students may be awarded up to $250 to support conference presentations. See the details here.
Responsiblities in the Supervisory Relationship Policy
The School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education is dedicated to the promotion of effective graduate teaching/learning/supervisory experiences for graduate faculty, students, graduate advisors, and graduate secretaries. Effective supervision is a joint effort and partnership of the supervisory unit, the supervisory committee members, the student, the graduate advisor and the graduate secretary. This document is designed to help to clarify the principles and policies for best practices in graduate supervision. Policies and procedures generated by academic units are required to be consistent with those established by the Office of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Follow this link for the full text of the Supervisory Relationship Policy.
Supervisory Practices Complaint Procedures
From time to time, students or other Faculty Members make complaints to the Dean of
the Faculty of Graduate Studies (hereafter the “Dean”) regarding graduate supervision.
In all cases, attempts should be made to first resolve complaints within the academic
unit. Such efforts should involve the supervisory committee, the graduate advisor, and
the head of the academic unit to a degree that is reasonable considering the nature of
the complaint. A record of efforts at resolution at the academic unit level should
accompany any complaint brought forward to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. This
document sets out the internal procedures of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in
responding to such complaints involving faculty members. For the full text regarding these procedures click here to download the PDF document Supervisory Practices Complaint Procedures.
