This content analysis is aimed towards
a grade eight girls PE class. Since most of the students are at a
rudimentary level, the main content of our lessons focused on the forearm
pass. The problems, skills, and movements of volleyball are incorporated
into both the unit and lesson plans. Most of the tasks created for
this lesson involve a tactical problem, while other tasks develop and concentrate
on performing the skill. We presented the tactic before the skill
so the students will understand why before they know how. Hopefully
our unit will lead to a greater understanding of volleyball.

On-the-ball skills |
|
|---|---|---|
| Consistency: read and react.
Students must first learn to use the forearm pass in a consistent manner. They must "read" where the ball is going to be played and "react" to make the forearm pass. Both skills and tactics are introduce to solve this problem. |
Forearm Pass
shuffle step to get under the ball; weight is on the balls of the feet to increase reaction time. Ball is received onto the wide, flat side of the forearm and follow through upwards, generating power from a wide stance and deep knee flexion to extension.
|
ready position - knees flexed, feet slightly larger than shoulder width apart, arms up and out ready to receive the ball; reading where the opposing player is going to play the ball; reacting to that area (i.e. peeling off the net to retrieve a free-ball). |
| Accuracy: playing the ball
with enough force and precision to hit a target.
After the students have learned to use the forearm pass consistently, the next step is for them to learn to hit to a target. This target can be a teammate or an open space in the opposition's court. |
Forearm Pass
knees flexed; flat platform; bellybutton faces target; force produced from the legs, not the arms; shuffle step to get under the ball; weight is on the balls of the feet. |
ready position; movement to a position where it is best to play the ball - body should be square behind the ball to make it easier to play the ball to a specific area. The side arm pass can also be used, but it is not recommended because there are more variables in that skill that can go wrong which will create an inaccurate pass. |
| Positioning/movement: supporting the ball.
Volleyball is a very dynamic sport and students should learn early on that movement is very important concept of the game.
|
where to go after you have made a pass; supporting
back row players; supporting front row players; knowledge of positions
and roles for each player on a team of six.
|
peeling off the net; supporting the attacking
players; supporting on defense; movement after the serve.
|
Logical progression will lead to the development of power. Power has already been implemented in the concept of generating enough force to play the ball to a target. Now power will be emphasized as a factor in decreasing the ability for the opponent to return the ball. This only comes into play during the attack phase of volleyball, not during passing between teammates.
