BLOCK PLAN - Four lesson Volleyball unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.  Depending on the response of students this progression could be adapted.

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem
Placement and Positioning: using the forearm pass, play the ball to a target.
Lesson focus: performing the forearm pass correctly so  it goes to a target .
Skill objective: ready position; knees flexed; flat platform formed by the arms; bellybutton to target.
Introductory task/game
1. Catch and Toss game in a box
2. Forearm pass in a box
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
1. Skill development in three's
2. Continuous Passing Game in three's
  • triangle formation.
  • see how many successful passes each group can make.
Culminating Game: 3 vs 3 over net
  • use badminton nets or modified courts to simplify
  • allow one bounce if needed.
  • start with a toss that simulates a free ball.
  • score a point when everyone on one side of the net has played the ball.  The third hit should be over the net.
 
Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
Movement: reading and reacting to receive a volleyball using the forearm pass .
Lesson focus: moving into the proper position to receive and play the ball using the forearm pass.
Skill objective: ready position; sliding to get under the ball; bellybutton to target.
Introductory task/game
1. Forearm pass, 1 vs 1
2. Two versus Two
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
1. One vs One Against the Wall
2. Read and React Drill
  • one player tosses the ball to either side of their partner.
  • partner returns the ball using the forearm pass.
  • the concept is to read and react to where the ball is going.
  • to make this drill more difficult, have the tosses vary height and distance.
Culminating Game: Monarch of the Court 
  • students are in pairs in modified courts.  Two games can be played on one court by dividing it down the middle.
  • the idea of this game is to hold "court".
  • count points for how many times you win rallies while your team "holds court".
 
Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
Setting up for the attack; transition from a freeball
Lesson focus: moving to receive a freeball and then moving forward to support attack.
Skill objective: peeling off the net to get into proper position to receive a freeball.
Introductory task/game
1. Hulla-hoop game in threes
2. Three person shuttle
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
1. 3 vs 3 in modified courts (long and narrow)
2. Freeball skill development
Culminating Game: 3 vs 3 
  • use a modified court (long and narrow)
condition: all players must be in the front zone when the opposing team hits over the net.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Lesson 4
Tactical Problem
Setting up to attack 
Lesson focus: introducing the overhead pass
Skill objective: use the forearm pass and overhead pass successfully in an attack.
Introductory task/game
1. Unlucky Person In The Middle
  • condition: ball must be caught and tossed overhead; push the ball high back to your partner without letting the "Unlucky" person in the middle.
2. Introduce the overhead pass
  • cues: ready position; move behind and under ball; hands 10-15 cm above forehead; make a window; shape fingers to fit ball; extend arms and legs at same time towards target; contact ball on pads of fingers; fingers are spread apart
  • IMPORTANT - do not overload students with cues.  Observe your class and use two or three cues that best fits their needs.
3. Passer In The Middle
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
1. 3 versus 3
Culminating Game: Monarch of The Court
  • 3 versus 3.
  • condition: must attempt to make three hits - the teacher will enforce this rule.
