Assessment
Student Learning
-
The students will be required to observe a volleyball player
performing the forearm pass incorrectly. Their task is to write down
what the player is doing incorrectly as well as ways to correct it.
-
The students will be assessed in their accuracy of the forearm
pass in a game situation. Their attempt to play the ball and their
performance will be graded out of five - 2 marks for the attempt; 1 mark
for a flat platform; 1 mark for using the legs for force; and 1 mark for
the ball reaching its target. The students will be told what the
criteria is before they are marked.
-
The students will be marked for their movement during a modified
game. A mark is given when the player moves to: (1) receive a free-ball
(2) moves to support a defending teammate and (3) moves to support the
attack. A maximum of five marks will be awarded.
-
The students will be assessed on their attempt to keep a
rally going. Marks will be awarded for: (1) making the attempt to
get a maximum of three hits before sending the ball over the net (2) calling
either "mine" or their name as they play the ball (3) communication and
support between teammates
-
Students will also be given a small quiz which will outline
the rules and court areas gone over in class.
Peer Evaluation
-
Students can also be assessed by their peers. A Game
Performance Assessment Instrument, or GPAI, can be implemented by the teacher
to be used for a portion of the grade. For an example of a GPAI see
the link below and also refer to Teaching Sport Concepts and Skills
by Griffin, Mitchell & Oslin (1997).
When students evaluate each other they take away more
from the unit. When they watch and look for certain cues that their
peers are performing, they take away that knowledge. When it is their
turn to perform the task they will have a deep understanding of what to
do because they have learned it in class and have also watched and evaluated
their peers do it.

Teaching Instruction
As professionals, teachers should also be assessed.
There are many different ways to do this, for example, one can use a "time
on task" sheet (see link below).
