Assessment Tools

In the Physical Education classroom, students need to be continually assessed and evaluated so that the teacher and the student can work together on improving the studentís progress and performance.Gymnastics is a sport that is very technically and physically demanding. Therefore, to best help a student improve their skills a teacher must utilize several different methods of assessment.By using more than one type of assessment tool, the teacher can have a better idea of the studentís progress, and the student will also have a better idea of where they are in terms of skill and performance.

The best way to assess students is to use a variety of methods: teacher assessment, peer assessment, and self-assessment.This allows for several different perspectives on a studentís performance, and it gives the student multiple sources of feedback from which they can learn.

The assessment tools that will be used shall include the following:

1.Participation Records-did the student participate? Did they perform/attempt to perform the skill(s)?

2.Short & Long Term Observation Reports-How did the student perform on a particular day?Over the unit?Note improvement, and areas in need of improvement.

3.Peer Assessment Tools-the Reciprocal Style will make use of this. The students will be given task cards, and while one student performs, the other observes and does a peer assessment.

4.Self Assessment Tools- the Self Check Style will be used for this. The student will be given a check list of important points of a skill that they must master. They then perform the skill, and assess themselves, using the checklist as a guide.

5.Performance Assessment- in the last class of the unit, the students will perform a floor routine for the class. The teacher, the class, and the group themselves will assess the performance, using the Floor Routine Assessment Sheet. The requirements are as follows:

Skill Student Assessment:
Was the skill performed?
Self Assessment:
Skill performance /5
Teacher Assessment:
Skill performance /5
Front Support
Rear Support
Front Roll
Backward Safety Roll
Headstand
Half Handstand
2 Jumps
Flow between skills
Bonus: Creativity
Total

There are eight (8) required components that must be performed for the group of students to get full marks. The students will be given time to practice their routines during the two classes just prior to the performance day.

The peer assessment will consist of observation and completion of a check-list.The observers will carefully observe the performance, noting what skills the performers included, and then complete the checklist to see if they met the performance requirements.

The self-assessment will include a checklist, and it will include an affective personal assessment as well where the student performers indicate how they felt while performing, and how they felt their performance went.

The teacher assessment of the student performers will include a checklist to make sure the objectives are met.It will also include marks given for the skills performed out of 5.
