Classrooms would look on Tv, Internet and in newspapers for stories of floods, mudslides and blizzards in their community or around the world. Questions to ask: Why did this happen? Who was most affected? What is the governement going to do? How could this (or could this) disaster have been avoided?
Next, design a town meeting around a water disaster in one of these communities. Students would take on the role of the people in the community who have been affected. The goal of the town meeting could be how to restore the community after the disaster. Players could be store owners, professionals, children, parents, government officals, and municipal officals. Some issues to consider would be: Will the community work together or be too wrapped up in their own concerns? Do they decide to move out of the flood zone or make better preparations (and what are they?)
The skills involved in a project like this are: research, presentation, role play, writing and reading. A final act to this would be to write a letter to a disaster relief agency with the class recommendations or to help out a disaster relief agency.
