Field Grown Tomatoes...

Below are pictures taken of the same plot in California over a seven month timescale.

Stage 1

Plants are started indoors and then brought outdoors once the frost is over.

These pictures were taken in late May early June in California.

Pick a sunny spot. Put your plants where they'll get sunlight most of the day and you can examine them regularly.

Stage 2

Tomato plants need plenty of the basics.

The basics include water, sunlight, and soil. Can you think of anything else that is crucial for a tomato plant to grow?

(Hint: you want a lot of it away from your younger brother or sister.

Stage 3

Ready to pick after only a few months, approximately four to six months depending on the variety.

This field was ready to be picked in late August to mid September.

Prepare the garden for next year...

The type of soil mix that you use is crucial. Here's the best (for each two feet of trench length, or six cubic feet of mix):

1. Three parts topsoil to one part well-rotted manure, compost or peat moss.

2. Three-fourths pint of 6-12-12 or 5-10-15 fertilizer.

3. Two-thirds pint of ground limestone, if the soil hasn't been limed for the past two years.
