Question:

What jobs are needed to make a community?

Objectives:

- Students will become aware of the various jobs that exist in the community

- Students will realize the importance of these various jobs and their necessity for the survival of the community

Drama Activity - Freeze Frame

Grades: 2-4

Materials: None

Time Needed: Approximately 30-40 minutes

Development:

1. Divide the class into groups of three.

2. Give each group a card with the name of one common occupation. Select one student from each group to take this occupation; this student will become the main community helper.

3. The group must then discuss all of the different characters that relate to that particular community helper. For example, if the community helper is a dentist, the related characters might be: patient & dental assistant.

4. The group will then decide on one scene in which each student can play a character that has been discussed.

5. Remember to circulate through all of the groups and help the students decide what related characters they are to be and what type of scene they are going to show.

6. After about 10 minutes of practice time, each group will go to the front of the class and begin by freezing their characters in an appropriate scene. For example: The patient could be lying back in a chair, The dentist could be examining the patient's teeth, and the dental assistant could be holding a suction cup.

7. As soon as the group is frozen into position, other class members will try to guess what the scenario is, who the characters are, and what the characters are doing. If the class is having difficulties guessing, you as the teacher can help the students by providing a number of hints.

8. After the group is done, the class can discuss the important roles of the related characters who are also community helpers. For example, the dental assistant also has an important job in the community. Without dental assistants, dentists could NOT do their work as efficiently.
