Mathematics and the Community

The theme of the community is seen in many different curriculums in North America. We hope to help the teacher integrate math and the community in a realistic way by looking at topics such as:

QUESTIONS:

How far apart are places in our community?

How can we find places in our community?

OBJECTIVES 1:

Work in estimation

Understanding and measuring with proper units of measure

Compare distances in the same unit

Compare distances in different units

QUESTION:

How do we use money effectively in the community?

OBJECTIVES 2:

Skip counting

Estimation (rounding off)

Comparing and analysing prices

Percent (i.e. shopping)

Working with decimals
