Performance Support Systems

What is a Performance Support System?

A Performance Support System is a computerized system that integrates various technologies to provide support for on the job practical tasks. In a way it is a very elaborate version of the HELP component of a lot of computer programs.

A performance support system is a strategic application of technology, particularly in the workplace. Since technology cannot be separated from human activity, current PSS's focus on both approriate deployments of technolgy and the effective relationships between people and technologies. Performance Support Systems are considered to be useful in professional training programs and to maintain efficient office and large system operation and management. A PSS is similar to an expert system in that it is designed to respond to a specific need rather than to provide general training. It offers, on demand access to appropriate information tools and software and the experiences of others.

Since it has the capacity to continuously respond to changing circumstances, a PSS is regarded as a dynamic support system. In fact its ability to function dynamically makes it very popular in businesses and endeavours where circumstances are continually changing. Thus it is also referred to as "Dynamic Tutoring"

Accessing a PSS is usually accomplished through a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI incorporated in Microsoft Windows is an effective interface, so most personal computer users may have built in access to a PSS.

The Components of a Performance Support System

Databases: Banks of information accessible at any time.

Decision support systems: Computerized tools to help a user make effective decisions.

Hypertext: The user may only have to click on a word to get extra help.
