Explore the microsopic world with Kelly Nordin during this two hour
hands-on workshop. You will learn to use both dissecting and compound
microscopes while discovering the intricacies of the world we can not see
as well as the diversity of microscopic organisms. Though we will
specifically address the Grade 6 Life Science Prescribed Learning
Outcomes, we will also consider where else microcopes can enhance
learning. The workshop will wrap-up with a discussion of approaches to
using microscopes in your science classroom - and beyond!" |

L Hut next to the Field Hockey Fields at the U of Victoria

Session
1. This is a hands-on look at rocks to wee what igneious, sedimentary
and metamorphic rocks tell us about the Earth's past. Life forms have
also changed over time and fossils tell this story. What kinds of
fossils are there and what kinds of organisms lived in the past. See
how to make a time line for the Earth and reconstruct ancient geography.
We'll see how fossils are useful for dividing up earth history and
telling relative age of rocks.
Session 2. Hands on activities to bring our local plate setting to
life and explain why you get different types of volcanoes. Why do
earthquakes occur in some places and not in others? What are seismic
waves and what are some of the effects of earthquakes |
